Jókai-kert Natural Reserve
<p class="Norml1" style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="FR">Mór Jókai's love of nature and gardens was a decisive factor in his life. In 1853, indulging his passion for horticulture, he bought the land on Svábhegy - an abandoned quarry - together with the house on it.</span></p>
He replaced the dense thicket that covered the land with vines and fruit trees. To protect against the frequent strong winds, he planted lime, maple, silt, barberry, chestnut and walnut trees, and created a small ornamental park around the house. The harvests in the garden of the family house in Swabian Hill were a major event in Hungarian artistic life, and one of the centres of contemporary intellectual life was established here.
After the writer's death, the garden changed hands and gradually fell into disrepair, and the building had to be demolished due to its poor condition. Fruit trees were planted, a rose garden and a vineyard were established, the windbreaks were renovated and aggressive species were removed. In cooperation with the Petőfi Literary Museum and the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society, information boards, bird boxes and bird feeders were installed to illustrate the age of Jókai and the natural values of the garden.
The Jókai Garden has been a national nature reserve since 1975 and a protected historical garden since 2007. It is currently home to the following institutions:
