Characterisation of the protected natural assets

The protected flowering plants of outstanding beauty of the steppe meadows in the Pogácsa-legelő nature reserve are the numerous (40-50 000 plants) of the agar (Anacamptis morio) and the tens of thousands of stems of the bushy-smelling basket (A. coriophora), the species of the barren-headed coriope (Stipa spp.) and the highly protected spider bans (Ophrys sphegodes). The occurrence of marsh rabbit-grass (Sesleria uliginosa) is a botanical rarity. The most spectacular flowering plants of the marsh meadows are the protected marsh orchid (Orchis laxiflora subsp. palustris), flesh-coloured foxglove (Dactylorhiza incarnata), blood-grass (Sanguisorba officinalis), buttercups (Ranunculus spp.) and marsh stork's-ear (Caltha palustris).

The arthropod fauna of the Pogácsa pasture is particularly rich, with protected species including the large peacock's-eye (Saturnia pyri) and the small foxglove (Nymphalis urticae). The most detailed research has been carried out to survey the birds in the area: of particular importance are the presence of the highly protected Paraguay eagle (Aquila heliaca), the saker falcon (Falco cherrug), the peregrine falcon (Circaetus gallicus) and the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus). The area is a feeding ground for these birds of prey. The maintenance of the habitat for prey animals, in particular the warthog (Spermophillus citellus), which is also a highly protected species, is a priority.
